COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A senior airman at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is headed to trial after being charged in his 15-month-old son's death.

A court martial for 21-year-old Matthew Theurer is planned to start on October 15 at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

In March, the body of Theurer's son was found in a plastic bag along a Columbus County road.

Theurer is facing charges of voluntary manslaughter, negligent homicide and murder.

An autopsy revealed that the boy died of malnourishment and neglect.

Authorities say the boy had come to live with his father and was often left home alone for 12 hours a day while Theurer worked.
