BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Officials in Brunswick County are warning residents about a scam that has been circulating Carolina Shores.
According to Calabash Town Clerk Kelley Southward, the scam involves a recorded message warning of increasing rates of death and injury from a fall or other home-alone medical emergency.
Southward said the caller advises that a medical alert device has been prepaid, including shipping so that the total package is "free." The recipient only needs to press 1 to accept the package or 5 to decline.
According to Southward, if you press 1 a live person will jump on the call and ask for credit card or bank information for supposed "monitoring fees, etc." before shipping the device.
If you receive a similar phone call, do not provide your personal information.
