PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Three people were killed in a head-on collision Sunday night, including a 6-year-old girl.

According to Trooper B. Wilson, Jessica Lynn Carr, 26 of Willard, was driving at a high rate of speed on Highway 11 around 7:00 p.m. when she crossed the center line.

Carr crashed into another vehicle that was occupied by 37-year-old Tammy Rae Giddens, also of Willard, and her two children.

Wilson said Carr and Giddens were killed in the accident, in addition to Giddens' 6-year-old daughter Lucy Ann Giddens, who was in a car seat during the crash.

Giddens' son was taken to Chapel Hill for treatment, and family members say he's suffering from a head injury, a punctured lung, and some broken bones.

Pender Co. Commissioner Jimmy Tate said people in Willard are shaken by the incident.

"It's certainly devastating," said Tate. "When I got back home last night and had heard about it, everybody I spoke with was devastated and still are."

"It's such a tragedy something like this had to happen," said resident Buck Moore. "Maybe it will bring the community together more, something like this. I hope so."

Giddens worked at Sam's Club for 13 years. She actually worked in the produce department Sunday before she was killed Sunday night. The manager says everyone has been working with heavy hearts.

The family is still at Chapel Hill and hasn't made funeral arrangements yet.

Officials are waiting for the results of alcohol and drug tests in connection to this accident.
