WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - Chris Wilcox's 11 year NBA career hasn't stopped him from remembering where he is from. This week the former Whiteville standout hosting his 12th annual basketball camp at Whiteville High School for kids ages 7 through high school July 8-12.
"Every day I come home it feels so good. To see these kids with such joy, I get a kick out of coming home and seeing that," said Wilcox.
Wilcox not taking anything for granted these days. In March of 2012 he had season-ending surgery to fix a heart abnormality. Less than 10 months after surgery he was back on the court and looking back his return to the court might have come too soon.
"I had so many people telling me that I wasn't going to be back for the season, and I was so motivated to prove everybody wrong," said Wilcox. "I might have hurt myself in the long run".
Now at 100 percent, Wilcox believes he still has plenty in the tank, and is looking forward to next season. But first he has to find a team.
After playing the past two seasons with the Boston Celtics, Wilcox is now a free agent, and doesn't know if he will be back in a Celtic uniform. What he does know is that his role in the league has changed.
"I am not saying I need to go in and start, but I want to help," he said.
