National Hurricane Center downgrades Chantal, tropical moisture - WECT, weather & sports Wilmington, NC

National Hurricane Center downgrades Chantal, tropical moisture still aims for Southeast U.S.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Late Wednesday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center could no longer detect a closed wind circulation within Chantal so it downgraded the system to the status of a "remnant" low pressure system.

TRACK FORECAST FOR THE REMNANTS OF CHANTAL: The remnants of Chantal will track northwest over Cuba and possibly parts of the Bahamas and Florida through the end of the week.

INTENSITY FORECAST FOR THE REMNANTS OF CHANTAL: Unless a closed circulation can re-develop within the remnants of Chantal, the system will not likely be able to develop strong winds.

HOW WILL THE REMNANT SYSTEM AFFECT NORTH CAROLINA? Some tropical moisture from the remnants of Chantal may be shunted north along a cold front which will be settling across the region late in the week and the weekend. This moisture *may* serve to increase the coverage and intensity of rain associated with the front. We will keep you informed should any flood issues develop from this pattern.
