LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) - Chris Haney will take over as head football coach at East Columbus high school pending approval from the Columbus County School Board which is scheduled to meet on July 15.
East Columbus athletic director Karl Bracy could not confirm or deny the move.
The move to Lake Waccamaw will mark the first head coaching job for Haney who was most recently an offensive assistant coach at New Hanover. Haney was also on staff at Ashley high school under Dylan Dimock and Jason Tindal.
Haney replaces Toby Kasell who stepped down in June to take a position at Leland Middle School where he will head up the football program as well as track team.
The Gators are coming off the best season in program history setting marks for wins (9) and playoff appearances. The Gators lost 19-18 to Albemarle in the third-round of the Class 1A playoffs.
Haney will make his debut when East Columbus opens the 2013 season at West Columbus on August 23.
