Authorities say a 73-year-old man was shot in the chest at close range at his home in Rural Parks, AZ.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office said they received a report of a shooting Sunday in the town along Interstate Highway 40 between Bellemont and Williams.
CCSO said the victim was found shot once in the chest and was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center, where he is in critical condition. Due to his condition, police were not able to interview him.
During a police interview, the victim's 29-year-old wife stated that they both had been drinking at a nearby bar and when they got home they got in a fight. The husband said he was going to spend the night in his Jeep parked outside.
She said overnight her husband came back into the house and they started to argue again.
According to the woman, her husband placed his hands around her neck and began to choke her. Then a .22-caliber handgun went off. Detectives are investigating who was holding the weapon at the time of the shooting.
The sheriff's office is withholding the names of the couple as they continue to investigate.
