UNCW senior qualifies for US Women's Amateur

News release from UNCW Athletic Communications:

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Rising senior Lori Beth Adams continued her solid play on Monday as she qualified for the 2013 United States Women's Amateur Championship.

Playing at the Dalton Golf and Country Club in Dalton, Ga., Adams finished the 18-hole qualifier in fourth place with an even par 72, two strokes off the pace set by qualifier champions Katy Funk and Ally McDonald.

The result marked another solid performance for the Burlington, N.C., native, who enjoyed a breakout junior season in 2012-13 by posting a school-record 74.12 stroke average in 12 events played. The CAA Player-of-the-Year, Adams recorded eight top 10 finishes and five top five results on her way to earning an individual invitation to the NCAA Central Regional, where she finished tied for 11th.

Adams has also excelled on the amateur circuit this summer, recording a fourth place finish in the Women's Eastern Golf Association Amateur Championship, held June 11-13 at the Kingsmill River Course in Williamsburg, Va. She will also take part in the 111th Women's North & South Amateur Championship, scheduled for July 16-21 at the Pinehurst Resort in nearby Pinehurst, N.C.

The U.S. Women's Amateur is one of the USGA's original three championships. It was first conducted in 1895, shortly after the inaugural U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open. The Women's Amateur has since been conducted every year except 1917-18, when it was temporarily suspended because of World War I, and 1942-45, when it was suspended because of World War II.

The 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur will take place Aug. 5-11 at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. The starting field of 156 players will play two rounds of stroke play before the field is trimmed to 64 for match play.
