Volunteer fire dept. to shut down; won't merge with Pender EMS

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - The Surf City Volunteer Fire Department is officially not merging with Pender EMS.

Instead, the department will be shut down, and Pender County will get the department's property and debt.

County leaders voted to end their contract last month. Currently, the Surf City Volunteer Fire Department is about $430,000 in debt.

Emergency management officials say they will most likely pay it off by selling some of the department's property, adding that some of the volunteers could work for the Town of Surf City's fire department.
