Could Panthers' WR Lester head to AFL?

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Albany Panthers are in rebuilding mode after losing several starters to retirement, but now they could lose another star.

It's not a sure thing, but both Panthers head coach Lucious Davis and GM Will Carter say they won't be surprised if wide receiver Johnny Lester gets some Arena League looks this offseason.

The rookie wide out only played eight games, but made an immediate impact with the Panthers.

He led the team with 64 receptions and 15 touchdowns in 2013.

Davis says he's not surprised the young speedster is on many Arena League radars, and says he knows Lester can play on that level.

However, after losing five starters from this year's squad to retirement, Davis admits it would be great to have him back for 2014.

"Selfishly, I want him to come back," says Davis. "But as a business decision, I think it's best for him to try his luck on that level. But if it doesn't work out, it would be great to have him back."

Lester's season totals were good enough for top five in the PIFL in four categories, including receptions and receiving yards per game.
