CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – Several emergency officials are responding to a report of a boat sinking off of Freeman Park.
According to New Hanover County Dispatch, calls came in about a boat taking on water around noon Friday.
Dispatch said the Coast Guard, NHC Sheriff's Office, and Carolina Beach lifeguards are responding.
According to Robert Schoonmaker with the CB Inlet Association, the boat was 19 feet and four people were rescued from the water.
Schoonmaker said that situations like this could be avoided if the inlet was receiving the proper dredging that it needs.
He said that when the water is too shallow in the inlet, it makes it much easier for a boat to capsize or run-a-ground.
"It needs to be maintained. It's no different than if I-40 had potholes in it and people were wrecking because of the potholes," said Schoonmaker. "They would fix those potholes. Here they just seem to be over-looking it and we don't seem to be getting the attention or maintenance we deserve down here".
Schoonmaker said that the Wilmington District of the Army Core of Engineers is responsible for the upkeep of the inlet and he hopes they will attend to the problem soon.
