WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - Emergency officials at Lake Waccamaw are warning people to jump in the water with caution this weekend.

Police Chief Scott Hyatt says due to all of the rain, the lake is three to four feet deeper than it normally is.

Chief Hyatt says sometimes people will run and jump into water and then panic when they realize it's deeper than they're used to.

He also says many people swim underneath the piers, but because the water is so high, it is actually touching the piers. If they aren't careful , they could hit their heads.

Thousands of people come to the lake during the Fourth of July weekend.
