NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Members of the Human Wall for Fallen Soldiers surprised one young soldier who's heading off to training, giving her an airport send-off she says she definitely was not expecting.
About a dozen members of the group held American flags and congratulated and hugged Katherine McDonald, wishing her luck in training.
The recent high school graduate will be headed to Virginia to train for seven weeks. She'll be going into the Army Reserves.
Her mom said she was moved to see the group show up to support her daughter and glad she now knows she is not alone.
"The military doesn't get enough support and recognition from people who are not in the military," said Monica Thomas. "This just shows her she has support outside of her family, her boyfriend and friends, and that people appreciate what she does."
