WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation has established the Dan and Sheila Saklad Oncology Education Endowment in honor of a $100,000 gift from the Saklads.
According to a spokesperson for the hospital, earnings from the endowment will go towards educational needs for the nurses and staff at the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center and oncology services.
"Dan and Sheila Saklad have been supporters of New Hanover Regional Medical Center for several years and we are honored by their gift," said Aline Lasseter, vice president of development & executive director of the NHRMC Foundation.
According to NHRMC, Sheila Saklad was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2012 and have developed a relationship with the caregivers at the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center and in the NHRMC oncology unit.
"Everyone has been professional and compassionate and so many have gone out of their way to ensure that we were well cared for," said the Saklads. "We feel that this medical center is a valuable resource for the community and we wanted to give back to the caregivers who have done so much for us."
This experience helped drive the Saklad's decision to fund this endowment.
