NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners is bringing in outside counsel to aid in the legal battle with former commissioner Brian Berger.
Last month the commissioners voted to remove Berger from the board. Now he is appealing that decision.
The county has its own attorney but is seeking outside help for this matter.
Commissioner Jonathan Barfield said the board is hiring John Martin, a lawyer with Ward and Smith law firm. The firm has offices across the state.
Barfield said that no official payment plan had been set up, but he suspects the hire will cost at least five thousand dollars.
Barfield said that he still does not agree with the amotion to remove Berger, but believes outside legal counsel is necessary in this situation.
"In the past, boards of commissioners have always hired outside counsel that had expertise in an area the county staff did not have expertise in so I have no issue with this board going down that road," said Barfield.
Barfield said the board previously hired outside legal counsel when dealing with bonds and solid waste matters.
