PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Citizens living on Copperhead Lane, a private road outside of Burgaw, say the road is so bad because of excess rain recently, they're taking matters into their own hands.

Monday, a few men were filling holes along the road with dirt, and trying to stop water from flowing on it.

Neighbors say there are around 40 homes on the road, and mail hasn't been delivered in days. Some residents say that the road is so bad that they can't go to work, and their vehicles have been damaged.

They say it's gone from being an inconvenience to life-or-death situation, because there are residents on the road with health issues, and there's no way that an ambulance could drive down Copperhead Lane without getting stuck.

According to residents, officials with the Department of Transportation have said they will improve the road, but it will be a few months before construction starts, and Four County Electric will have to remove seven electric poles.

According to a Four County Electric worker, it will cost at least $10,000 to remove those poles.

Residents aren't sure whether or not they will have to pay that cost.
