BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Families in one community are stranded after the weekend's storms.

Residents living on Maple Road in Ash said their road washed away Sunday morning.

They said the fire department initially made them a makeshift ladder bridge, but had to take it away because the road is private and the department would be held responsible if anyone were hurt on the bridge.

The residents had to build their own version of the bridge to take care of the problem.

"It's scary and it's really unsafe how we're doing this, but it's all we got right now," said resident Nichole Drayton.

Residents said this is not the first time they have had this issue.  They said the road washed away three months ago and they pulled their money to construct a new one, but now they hope someone will help them build a permanent, paved road.
