NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WECT) – A day after the Supreme Court struck down DOMA and returned marriage equality to California, people in Wilmington and across the country are reacting to the monumental news.
By invalidating the Defense of Marriage Act, gay couples who are legally married will now have access to federal benefits, including social security survivor benefits, immigration rights and family leave.
New Hanover County Commissioner and congressional candidate Jonathan Barfield stands by the landmark decision.
"I think America is the land of the free and home of the brave and you know, folks have the right to live their lives however way they choose to live them," said Barfield. "That's what America was founded on."
WECT has reached out to Congressman Mike McIntyre on the issue. We are still waiting for a response.
