NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WECT) – Public transit authorities with the wave transit say the two routes could eliminated because just not enough people are riding. Routes on the cutting block include the northern New Hanover County and Pleasure Island routes.
Because they are not fully funded and the low ridership, the two routes pulled the short straw.
A resolution was also passed during the same meeting, urging New Hanover County commissioners to forgive a loan that would allow the routes to continue another year. If not, the cuts will go into effect and the routes will be terminated by September 30.
Executive director Albert Eby is hopeful that the routes are sustained for the well being of wave passengers.
"These routes don't just provide transportation but it provides them an opportunity to get to employment to get to education to get to medical trips," said Eby. "This is a real lifeline for a lot of these passengers."
Wave Transit will hold public hearings regarding the matter on August 21- 22. Eby says he hopes the public gets involved and voices their concerns to county commissioners.
