WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Four lonely hounds took a trip up north Wednesday.

Members of the Carolina Basset Hound Rescue group get the animals out of the shelters. Then they connect them with a bigger group to find the dogs permanent homes.

Thanks to some pilots who also volunteer their time and services, four Basset Hounds flew out of Wilmington Wednesday morning.

"So these four girls are catching a private flight up to Pennsylvania where they will meet a representative from Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue who will finish their vetting that wasn't done down here and then help them get adopted into new forever homes," said Ava Werstlein with Carolina Basset Hound Rescue.

"Many of the rescues that we fly for don't have the money for transportation and often what makes the difference between a dog being put down or finding a forever home is the transportation, especially from the southern states," said Scott Massinger, a pilot with Pilots N Paws.

The volunteers say there is a big need to help homeless Basset Hounds in North and South Carolina.
