CAROLINA BEACH, NC - (WECT) - Hundreds gathered in Carolina Beach to remember a teen who was killed suddenly over the weekend. Highway Patrol says Joseph Rutherford walked in front of on coming traffic and was hit by a car.
"It was not his time, everybody knew it was not his time," said family friend, Katherine Bolt. "This is like a bad dream, because he touched so many people, it's a bad dream."
Family and friends gathered near the Carolina Beach Boardwalk to say one final farewell. Friends say it's a spot Rutherford loved to go.
"He loved the beach," said Bolt. "This is where all of the locals would go, this was his life." His friends say the Ashley High School student, loved to rap and always had a smile on his face.
"He had a good heart, he was a good kid, and he was loved by all of his friends," said Bolt. She says he even dreamed of one day moving to the mountains.
"He was going to go to the mountains and build log cabins and his dad was really trying to get him there," said Bolt.
She says it will take everyone a long time to get over the shock of losing a loved one that was taken too soon.
