A 35-year-old Camp Verde man is accused of the brutal murder of a 40-year-old Yavapai-Apache tribal member.
The FBI said the killing happened on June 16 at a home on the reservation.
"It's shocking for us," said Camp Verde resident Patricia Slaughter. "It's shocking for my family. We actually only live a few miles from where it took place."
Court paperwork submitted by the FBI states Mario Chagolla Jr. stabbed Dwayne Beauty to death during a get-together at a friend's house.
Chagolla is accused of dismembering Beauty and then burning his teeth and hands in a wood stove.
"Very evil," said Camp Verde resident Ed Evans about the killing. "Probably, like I said, on drugs. What else would drive a person to that?"
According to the FBI, Chagolla blamed Beauty for the death of one his friends' girlfriends a few weeks earlier.
They said just prior to the killing, Chagolla told three other men in the house - as they were drinking and playing cards - he was going to "take care of" Beauty.
All three were there when that allegedly happened and no one said anything until law enforcement questioned them four days later.
According to court paperwork, the suspect's own father called law enforcement and told them he believed his son was involved in a murder and that the body had likely been burned on his property.
FBI agents eventually did find human bones and a knife inside of a burn barrel in that yard.
They also recovered teeth and human bone fragments from the wood stove at the friend's home.
Chagolla is being held without bond on a charge of first-degree murder.
He is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
As for the three men who were there when Beauty died, and who according to court paperwork did nothing to help him, no charges have yet been filed against them.
"In the end, they're going to have to answer for it," said Evans. "Once they go to meet their maker, they'll answer for it."
