PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT)- Last month the fire chief of the Surf City Volunteer Fire Department was cited for having a broken septic system.
According to the Pender County Health Department, Demetrius Batts started pumping sewage through a 200-foot hose into the woods behind the fire station when his personal septic system broke.
Batts was cited in May for a failed septic system and given until July 1 to fix it.
Tuesday, WECT learned the issue had been fixed, and wastewater was no longer being discharged behind the fire station.
The Health Department says failed systems are common.
