CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – Firefighters in Carolina Beach are growing out of their current fire station and ready to expand.
Friends and family packed the garage bays Monday night for a ground breaking of the facility's expansion. The spot where they stood will be repurposed into a classroom for firefighters, with a new bay area set for construction.
Chief Alan Griffin said fire crews will leave the station via Cape Fear Boulevard with the new setup, instead of Dow Road. The new bay area should make it easier for first responders, according to Griffin.
"It allows us to get on that road a little smoother," he said. "It also provides that main artery down to the main part of Carolina Beach."
Griffin estimates that 80% of the calls that firefighters respond to on the island start with a turn onto Dow Road, then Cape Fear Boulevard.
Before the construction even begins, Griffin said firefighters have already completed several steps in the renovation process in their dayroom, offices, and bunk rooms.
"We did a total remodel in house to save the taxpayers tons of money," said Griffin.
Construction is expected to take about a year.
