More than $24 million to go toward Wilmington Port, beaches

SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WECT) – Several area beaches, the Wilmington Port and the Intracoastal Waterway have received more than $24 million in federal funds, a spokesperson for Congressman Mike McIntyre announced Monday.

McIntyre met with the Corps of Engineers Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy in March of this year to talk about the importance of federal funds being used toward North Carolina's coast. He also requested funding for projects in the Army Corps of Engineers 2013 Work Plan.

The following amounts show the funding outlined in the 2013 Work Plan:

  • Wilmington Port -- $16,376,182 for Operations and Maintenance
  • Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway -- $1,896,200 for Operations and Maintenance
  • Cape Fear River above Wilmington -- $488,022 for Operations and Maintenance
  • Surf City and North Topsail beach - $274,450 for Investigations
  • Wilmington Harbor improvements - $49,900 for Investigations
  • Brunswick County Beaches -- $5,464,050 for construction (Ocean Isle Beach, Caswell Beach, and Holden Beach)
