BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The second suspect who was shot during an incident at a DWI checkpoint in Brunswick County earlier this month has been released from the hospital and has been arrested.
According to the sheriff's office, Antoine Levar Graham, 34, of Leland has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of assault with a deadly weapon with Intent to kill, 10 counts of AWDW on a government official, one count of flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, one count of felony conspiracy, one count of possession of marijuana up to ½ ounce, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Graham is being held in the Brunswick County Detention Facility under a bond of more than a million dollars.
Graham and Jerry Onasis Melvin, 42 of Leland, were shot during a weekend checkpoint.
According to Sheriff John Ingram, deputies saw Graham and Melvin throwing things from the vehicle before they got to the checkpoint.
The sheriff said the suspects' car did not stop as it approached the checkpoint, so deputies opened fire on the oncoming vehicle. The car, however, plowed through the checkpoint. Deputies used a pit maneuver in attempt to stop it, but the driver continued on after the vehicle spun out so officers opened fire again.
Both the Brunswick and New Hanover County Sheriff's Offices are conducting internal investigations into the shooting. An independent investigation is also being conducted by the SBI. Sheriff Ingram reportedly requested that the SBI review the case.
District Attorney Jon David made a concurrent request for the SBI to get involved in the investigation.
