WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A suspicious bone found under a house in Wilmington turned out not to be a human bone.
Investigators say the bone, found on Monday, June 24, is not that of a human being. WPD says it is likely a bone from a large animal.
The woman who lives in the house said she called her landlord for an exterminator to look for rats. She said an exterminator arrived to drop some rat poison under the house, but he left quickly after finding the bone.
"He just left," she said. "I didn't know what happened."
Stan Hollingsworth, owner of Bug-N-A-Rug Exterminators, said his staff called police when the employee shared a picture of the bone. It measures more than a foot long and it's covered in dirt and dust.
The woman who lives in the home added that the rest of the space is left unchecked. She said she's worried what else could be under there.
Officers on the scene had the exterminator, who returned to the house, remove the bone from the crawl space. Hollingsworth said his employee didn't want to go back under the house, because he was shaken up.
Hollingsworth sent the employee home early Monday.
