TOMS RIVER, NJ (AP) - A person from North Carolina was struck and killed by a car as she tried to cross a highway in southern New Jersey.
Toms River police said the 50-year-old man from Bladenboro was hit on Route 37 East around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Asbury Park Press in New Jersey, the man was identified as Charles Shaw.
Authorities said the man had been staying at a nearby motel, but further details were not disclosed.
The Asbury Park Press reports that the accident is the fifth fatal crash on Route 37 this year and the third involving a pedestrian. Six people have been killed overall in the crashes.
No charges have been filed in the accident, but an investigation is ongoing.
