NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - It's a milestone for Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, the organization celebrated the completion of their first subdivision. The Cottages at Cornerstone includes 40 affordable homes for families.
The final home dedication took place just moments before the celebration. Erika and her husband said being able to give their four children a place to call home, is a dream come true.
"It's always been a dream of ours, we've tried several rent to own properties but it hasn't always worked out," said Erika.
"I'm really excited, because now I am going to have my own house," said her son, Elijah.
The family spent countless hours building both other homes in the subdivision and their own home. Erika said she's glad her children were able to contribute to the project, explaining it has instilled a sense of pride in them.
The dedication of their home, marked the completion of the Habitat for Humanity subdivision. For the past seven years, thousands of volunteers have helped to build 40 homes in the area. After working on them, homeowners were then able to buy them at an affordable price.
"It's just amazing, every time I come home and I look at my home, I'm like, I can't believe it's mine," said Alecia, who moved in to her home about a year ago with her children and grandchildren. She says the permanent home has given them a sense of stability they never had.
"They are happier, they have a driveway they have a backyard," explained Alecia. She says it's amazing to be part of a neighborhood where everyone has helped to build each other's homes.
"We've grown together, we get to know each other, help each other out," said Alecia.
"It's amazing, I know my neighbors before I even move in, I've worked alongside them," said Erika.
She says it has built a strong community that she's happy to be a part of.
