ROCKY POINT, NC (WECT) – Pender County firefighters got a first-hand lesson on battling a blaze Saturday.
Fire officials burned down a house on Hwy. 117 for training purposes.
Although the house was being burned to the ground, it was actually a new beginning for a real estate firm from Wilmington.
Swain and Associates wanted the property cleared so they could build a "Family Dollar" store.
They said by letting the firefighters burn the house down, they are actually saving money because they do not have to pay to have the house demolished.
Josh Moss, Fire Chief, said this type of training is priceless.
"The best training in fire services is hands on, on the job training," said Moss. "It's not 700 degrees in the classroom, but putting them out here in the real thing gives them a real idea of whether this is something you want to do or not."
