A Closer Look: Woody White on incentives, economy, the budget & Berger

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The decision by DAK Americas to close its Cape Fear manufacturing facility in Navassa means some 600 workers will lose their jobs. The company plans to shut the plant down by the end of September. The move will hurt the economy of not just Brunswick County, but the entire region, says New Hanover County Board of Commissioners Chairman Woody White.

"Brunswick (County) is one of our partners, just like Pender (County)," White said. "We succeed and fail as a region, it's not just Wilmington and New Hanover County, so that hurts.  We need to do all we can to keep that from happening to our Corning, or our Castle Branch, or whatever other company it might be, to keep those jobs here and hopefully not have that story repeat itself."

White took over as Chairman of the Board after getting elected in November of 2012. It's his second effort at politics, after serving a short time as a state Senator. He has not had a quiet six months in office so far, having to deal with the concerns about school security, working to pass a budget that did not raise property taxes, and presiding over a rarely-used procedure called "amotion", which resulted in the removal of fellow commissioner Brian Berger from the board.

White doesn't regret running for the office.

"I am making a difference, along with my fellow commissioners, and we are doing good things," White said during an interview in his law office."We're doing what we think are the right things. Are we going to make some mistakes with policy or votes? Probably. We're humans. What you can do is use the information that you have and try to make the best decision at the time."
