United Way invests more than $4.5 million in community support

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The United Way of the Cape Fear Area is investing more than $ 4.5 million in community support to local citizens in Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender and Columbus counties, according to a news release.
Officials say grants, both new and renewed, as well as additional leveraged funds, will enhance local programs that address critical community needs in the areas of education, financial stability, health and basic needs.
The following is an excerpt of a news release from the United Way of the Cape Fear Area:
Programs funded in 2013 under a three-year Financial Stability grant include:
Total Funds Requested: over $3 million / 3 year
Total Funds Awarded: $795,000 / 3 year grants
- BackPack Program (Matthew's Ministry)
- Basic Needs Program (Brunswick Family Assistance)
- Connecting People to Preparation, Potential and Resources (Brunswick Housing Opportunities)
- Local Disaster Assistance (American Red Cross)
- Emergency Assistance (The Salvation Army)
- Emergency Food for the Hungry (Mother Hubbard's Cupboard)
- Emergency Shelter (The Salvation Army)
- Homelessness Intervention and Transition to Independence (Good Shepherd Center, WIHN, Phoenix Employment Ministry)
- Homelessness Prevention (The 10 Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness)
- Rise up Program (Phoenix Employment Ministry)
- Senior Employment Training (Senior Community Services Employment Program – SCSEP)
- Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministries (WARM)
- Woodworking Program (Kids Making It)
Additionally, two grant areas that continue to be funded through the United Way 3-year funding cycle includes: Education - $765,000 / over 3 years (2012 – 2015); Health - $855,000 / over 3 years

United Way of the Cape Fear Area raised over $2.2 million in its local annual campaign and invested $4,516,710 million back into the local Cape Fear community.
