WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – An event Sunday allowed for children with disabilities to do some fishing.
"Fishing with Special Friends" brought some friendly competition to Johnnie Mercer's pier.
The event even featured fish weigh-ins and prizes.
Families thought it was great getting to watch their children reel in fish.
"It's exciting to see them accomplishing something and being excited, even the ones that are scared to touch the fish. They are still laughing and giggling as it flops around and it's a lot of fun to watch them," said Jeanette Martinez, a mother at the event.
Families said there are not a lot of opportunities like this so they were glad to be part of the tournament.
This was the competition's third year.
