LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) – According to officials at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, a girl who nearly drowned in Columbus County last week died in the hospital Sunday night.
A spokesperson with the hospital said 3-year-old Catherine Powell passed away around 9:20 p.m. Sunday. She had been taken off life-support that night, according to Chief Scott Hyatt, of the Waccamaw Police Department.
Sunday morning, hospital representatives said the girl was in critical condition.
Powell was flown by medical helicopter to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a near drowning on the water in Lake Waccamaw Friday, authorities said.
According to Lake Waccamaw Police, Powell fell into the lake near Canal Cove Road around 6:30 Friday night. They say she was not in the water for a longtime and we're told other kids were also in the lake.
"My son and his friend were out by what they call the poles and they were playing. Everybody started screaming for help. The two boys, they're 12-years old they ran over and went under the pier, started searching around. They found little Catherine and brought her up. One of the ladies there did CPR. Then highway patrol came to help and policeman. Rescue squad arrived. Everybody was real professional did a great job. It's a real tragedy. We had high hopes that she was going to be fine. The outcome isn't what we expected," said Brent Jernigan, who's son tried saving Catherine.
Police say Catherine and her family live in the Raleigh area. According to friends, they visit the lake often.
Catherine is the niece of Whiteville attorney Cobun Powell.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. at Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh. A funeral service will be Thursday at 2 p.m., also at Hayes Barton Baptist Church.
