SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of students, faculty and staff at South Brunswick high school filled the home section of the football stadium Thursday night to pay their respects to James Prince.

Prince, who drowned Tuesday night, was scheduled to graduate from South Brunswick on Saturday.

"It's just a tragedy," said varsity basketball coach Scott Wainwright. "You never want to see parents bury their children. I've said it more than once, when I heard the news I hugged mine a little bit longer."

Wainwright was one of several speakers during the memorial service which was highlighted by a rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings by Keon Harrison.

"Nobody knows this but James once said to me if I go before you I want you to sing this at my funeral," Harrison said.

Along with the song, 17 balloons were released into the air, one representing each year of Prince's life.

"He was a brother to me, he was close to my dad, my mom," said football teammate Dylan Mosley. "Everybody's got their memories of him, he did something in everybody's life as you can tell with all of these people here he touched somebody."

Funeral services will be held at South Brunswick High School Sunday, June 16 at 1:00 p.m.
