Sunset Beach mayor seeks external investigation, third party help

SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) –Sunset Beach Mayor Richard Cerrato wants change in his local government after a former police officer was terminated from active duty with the force.

Jamie Clemmons was fired from the department after being investigated for a DWI arrest he made which the district attorney later dismissed.

Police Chief Lisa Massey decided to conduct an internal investigation. According to the termination letter, the decision to dismiss Clemmons was based on his "failure to follow rules and regulations of standard operating procedures" and for "conduct unbecoming a public officer or employee."

Even though Clemmons was dismissed, Cerrato argues the department should not have investigated itself.

"Simple when you look at it, 'yup we made the right decision'," said Cerrato. "We need to know more about our internal processes so it doesn't happen again."

The district attorney's office and town administration have determined that due to the town's personnel policy and that there were no criminal charges involved, the case would be closed following the removal of Clemmons.

Cerrato plans to re-propose an external investigation at the next town council meeting.
