Police warn of potential scam involving fraudulent checks

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Surf City Police Department are warning residents about a potential scam in the area.

According to police, a real estate agent told authorities they received a fraudulent check from a company named Kitsap Tractor & Equipment for the sum of $5,450.

A spam email was also sent to the real estate agent saying the company, located in Silverdale, WA, had finally mailed the check via Fedex Courier Service with a tracking number.

The email went on to say that the real estate agent would need to deduct the full amount for the reservation and have the remaining funds sent to the company's travel agent via Western Union.

Notify the police department if you ever receive an email, phone call or anything in the mail stating anything about Western Union or anything about winning the lottery. They will forward the information to the Attorney General's Office and to the FBI.
