NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An 82-year-old man living at the Northchase nursing home was surprised Thursday with a special honor.
Roy Piner was given an honorary doctorate degree in theology. The man is constantly reading and studying his Bible.
Staff members said he can read an entire book overnight and tell you all about it the next day.
The degree was bestowed by the North Carolina College of Theology.
Officials there said Piner knows more about the Bible than most preachers and could easily teach a class. It's that knowledge that earned him the doctorate degree.
"It's going to be hard to accept the fact that I'm now a doctor, but I'm really honored," said Piner.
This is only the second time an honorary degree has been given by the North Carolina College of Theology.
