UNCW Press Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW baseball and women's tennis programs have received Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for placing among the top 10 percent nationally for their work in the classroom.
It's the first Public Recognition Award for the two sports since the NCAA's initiative originated in 2004-05. Both teams had a perfect 1,000 score.
The NCAA honored 976 NCAA Division I teams Wednesday with Public Recognition Awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The teams recorded multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.
The APR is a yearly measure of eligibility and retention for student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. Wednesday's APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that includes scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.
A total of 268 out of 346 NCAA Division I schools placed at least one team on the top APR list. Twenty-three Colonial Athletic Association teams received the award and William & Mary had a league-high six teams honored.
