Weekly NAACP protest at General Assembly largest to date

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Opponents of Republican policies at the North Carolina General Assembly are holding their largest weekly demonstration to date since their movement began several weeks ago.

 

Roughly 1,000 people attended a rally late Monday afternoon behind the Legislative Building on Halifax Mall. Hundreds of those later entered the building. General Assembly and Raleigh police had arrested more than 50 protesters. Dozens more were expected to be cited and led away in plastic hand ties.

Hundreds of people waited outside and chanted outside buses where those arrested would be transported away.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has spearheaded demonstrations nearly every Monday since April to protest GOP policies on social programs, criminal justice and taxes. The NAACP publicized this rally as the largest "Moral Mondays" event.
