Police seeking witnesses in connection to fatal Surf City crash

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) – Surf City Police are asking that any witnesses who know anything about a fatal Surf City car crash that happened Tuesday to contact them.

Police say the crash happened on Hwy. 50 in front Food Lion Tuesday around 10:30 a.m. when Ralph Benjamin Anderson, 92, of Holly Ridge collided with Aubrey Lynn Hansley of Hampstead.

Anderson was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he died later that night.

Hansley, who sustained minor injuries, didn't go to the hospital.

Anderson was driving a silver Pontiac Sunfire, while Hasley was driving a red Chevrolet Blazer.

Due to conflicting witnesses' statements, officials are unclear as to how the cars collided, and they cannot determine who was at fault or which way the drivers were traveling. Therefore, police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at 910-328-7711.

Authorities did say that Anderson, who was wearing a seatbelt, had to be cut out of his vehicle, and that alcohol or drugs don't appear to be a factor.

Some witnesses reported seeing Anderson shopping in Food Lion earlier that day.

No charges have been filed at this time, but that's dependent upon further investigation.
