South Brunswick High School coach dies from heart failure

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - South Brunswick High School is not only mourning the loss of two students who passed away recently – they're also coping with the loss of a longtime football coach and friend.

Coach Nelson Berry, known to many as "Pops," passed away this past weekend due to heart failure, SBHS Principal Wayne Price confirmed.

Price says students, staff, and the community are walking with a heavy heart Tuesday.

Pops worked on campus for more than three years, and Price says he was very active at his job as an assistant football coach.

Pops also helped out on campus in the weight room.

The school has brought in a crisis team to help students with support after the loss of Isiah Randolph, Brittany Rayl, and Pops Berry.
