Onslow County School District Associate Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins said that 19-year-old Southwest Onslow High School senior quarterback Shak Pershey drowned in the water off North Topsail Beach in Onslow County.
He disappeared in the water Thursday night and his body was recovered early Friday morning.
Onslow County Emergency Manager Norman Bryson says a young male went under the water while swimming with friends around 7 p.m. Thursday. A search for the young man ensued on the water and from the air. His body was recovered at 2:10 a.m. Friday, according to Bryson.
Pershey helped the Stallions win the Class 1AA State Football Championship in December.
Dr. Collins says, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and school at this tragic time for the death of a Southwest senior football player."
Bryson did not know how far out the young man was when he went under, but Bryson did describe the water as "very choppy."
Several agencies responded to search for the young man, including North Topsail Beach Fire, North Topsail Beach Volunteer Rescue, North Topsail Police, Turkey Creek Fire/Rescue, the PEDRO helicopter from Cherry Point and the Coast Guard.
