PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The fire chief of the Surf City Volunteer Fire Department is reportedly pumping sewage where he shouldn't be.

According to the Pender County Health Department, when Demetrius Batts' personal septic system broke, he started pumping the sewage through a 200 ft hose to the woods behind the fire station.

The broken septic system was on his property.

Batts now has until July 1 to fix the issue. The Director of the Health Department said originally 30 days were given, but since they did not hear from Batts an additional 15 days were given. The director says it is her understanding that Batts has been in communication with department staff, and is aware of what he needs to do to fix the situation.

The Health Department does not know if the woods are county property.
