COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Commissioners in Columbus County talked Monday night about making a move with the industrial park, having it certified as a food processing park.
Commissioners approved Economic Director Gary Lanier's request to spend $25,000 to allow Southeast Regional Industrial Park to work with Garner Economics out of Atlanta.
Lanier said Garner Economics would use the industrial park to recruit food processing plants.
"Our single largest industry in Columbus County is agriculture. What goes hand and hand with agriculture is food processors. People who are taking the agriculture products and converting them into a form that can be sold into Food Lions and Krogers," said Lanier.
According to Lanier, the county will be the first in the state to have a certified food processing park.
