Toledo to host gun buy-back event in June - WECT, weather & sports Wilmington, NC

City will buy your gun, no questions asked

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

For the first time in a decade, the city of Toledo will be hosting a "cash for guns" event as part of an effort to curb violence.

For each working handgun, $50 cash will be given. There is a two-gun limit per person.

Sgt. Anita Madison says there will be no questions asked.

"You'll be able to come drop off your firearm, no questions asked. We're not going to be running records checks or any of that," said Madison.

The event will also be making gun education available, as well as free gun locks.

"Obviously, we want people to bring operable guns, but we also want them to be educated about having guns. If you're going to have guns, have them safely," said Madison.

Even though the event is being held during an election year, Pastor Cedric Brock says he does not believe it is a political stunt.

"As we know, when the weather gets warm, more crime happens. I don't think it's a political move. Whatever we can do to get guns off the street. It's so important," said Brock.

The event is being carried out as part of the mission for the Mayor's Coalition for Hope and the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence.

"If a person has a firearm in their home [and] they don't want it anymore, that's one less firearm that can be stolen and used on the street," explained Madison.

The event will be held June 8 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at People's Missionary Baptist Church located at 1101 Heston Street in central Toledo.
