NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC - (WECT) - The congregation of one New Hanover County church served lunch to local civil servants Sunday, to honor the hard work they do.
Firefighters, police officers, EMS officials and even the Sheriff of the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office all showed up to the Silver Lake Baptist Church.
The pastor says, they hold the annual feast every year because he believes it's important to honor those who put our lives before their own. He says it's especially important to him, because recently he suffered a heart attack, and credits civil servants for saving his life.
"We don't think they get enough recognition and thanks, and a lot of times with law enforcement all they see is what's bad," explained Pastor Lenier Furr. "We wanted to tell them that we are thankful to have them in our community."
"To know that a community and a church supports us and cares about us and is praying for us and then takes the time to feed us like this, is truly a blessing," said Sheriff Ed McMahon.
Pastor Furr says members of the congregation spent all day Saturday cooking.
