WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Actors Melissa McCarthy and Susan Sarandon filmed scenes along Fourth Street Friday afternoon in Wilmington.
The women were behind the wheel of a car for a scene involving their characters fighting about where to go next on their journey, and they keep making U-turns in the middle of Fourth Street.
McCarthy's character, Tammy, apparently wants to go to Niagara Falls.
Sarandon plays Tammy's grandmother, and the two hit the road together after Tammy loses her job and discovers her husband is cheating on her.
"It's a comedy about family, and it turns into a road trip," said Chris Henchy, one of the executive producers on the project. "Melissa and Susan go on the road and find out a lot about each other and crazy, fun Melissa stuff happens. It's a really funny comedy."
Henchy noted that McCarthy is great to work with both on and off the big screen.
"Melissa's so funny," he said. "It's the first time I've worked with her, and I'm so lucky to work with her. Our company teams up with them and she's just a crazy, good talent, so it's been fun."
Henchy, who is also behind HBO's Eastbound and Down, said the production picked this location because of film incentives and the experienced crew.
Eastbound will start filming its 4th season here in a few weeks. The series filmed part of its first three seasons here.
