Knocking the impossible: From the wheelchair to the waves
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Jesse Billauer was well on his way to a professional surfing career when a critical accident in the water washed those dreams away-- temporarily.
In 1996 Billauer suffered a spinal cord injury, resulting in quadriplegia-- the partial to total loss of function in both arms and both legs. However, his motivation to feel the freedom of the open water under his body again, moved him to start the non-profit Life Rolls On in 2002.
More than 10 years later the group has held largely successful surfing events around the country which provide support to people dealing with spinal cord injuries.
In a matter of minutes, the surfers go from their wheelchair to the water, with the help of some professionals and special equipment.
The "Life Rolls On" event is rolling into Wrightsville Beach Saturday, May 18, 2013 at beach access #4.
