WHITE LAKE, NC (WECT) - There is still a mystery as to the origin of White Lake, but there is no mystery about what takes place in the town this weekend -- the annual Water Festival, the kick off to their lake season.
Only about 500 people live at White Lake year round, but that population swells to several thousand during the warm weather months.
All around the lake are homes, businesses, campgrounds and plenty of campers. And thru the years, town leaders have worked to make sure White Lake remains a family destination.
Harry Womble has owned and operated one of those businesses, Goldston's Beach, for nearly 75 years. He says the town has changed over the years, but one that has remained constant, and that is the lake itself.
"It is just as clear as it has always been, and that is the real attraction here anyway, the water" said White Lake businessman Harry Womble. "The clearness of the water, it stays clear all of the time is because we don't have any inlet or outlet to the lake, it is fed by springs and you don't have all of that tannic acid coming in like you would have on a creek or any kind of inlet" said Womble.
Water Festival President Dawn Maynard says each spring she gets a lot of calls about White Lake and it's vacation opportunities.
"And what's great about that is what I think is a wonderful asset of White Lake is that it has not changed much, in a way that we are still a small community, we have not changed a lot, but there is a little bit of everything available here" said Water Festival President Dawn Maynard.
And many of those people will make their way to Bladen County this weekend, for food, fun, a parade and even some relaxation, as the thirty fifth White Lake Water Festival kicks off Friday night.
